To coincide with the partial solar eclipse visible across much of Western Europe on 12th August 2026, this spoken word piece by Steph Bevan – Science Communicator and trustee of Christians in Science – invites us to consider and embrace the wonder and mystery of this celestial event.

Great Barn of Wanborough, Westwood Lane, GU3 2JR

The Great Barn of Wanborough is the oldest and most important wooden building in Surrey, Sussex and Hampshire, built 630 years ago by the Cistercian monks of Waverley Abbey. It is run by a group of local volunteers.

Every year during the Spring and Summer months there are open days and activities. When the Barn is open to the public there is an exhibition in the Barn, describing its history, and local volunteers are present who can provide guided tours. Dogs are welcome.

Teas and cakes available on Open Days.

Admission is free.

Saint Columba’s House is an urban contemporary Christian retreat and conference centre in Woking.

Explore the house and gardens, enjoy a guided tour, walk the garden labyrinth, visit the art exhibition or spend a quiet moment in the Oratory.

Whether you're visiting for the first time or returning, everyone is welcome. Bring family, friends, colleagues and members of your Church. No booking is needed — just drop in between 11am and 3pm on Saturday 1st August.

There is also a wide variety of events throughout the year, including meditation evenings, day retreats, art exhibitions and vocal workshops.

A Warm Welcome space is a physical space run by a community group, charity, organisation, or business, where people can come to warm up, get a hot drink for free, get energy advice and debt support and enjoy some social interaction. Some settings also benefit from additional services such as free meals and activities.
