Action For Children (AFC)

Action for Children

This year we are proud to be celebrating 140th anniversary of AFC.  On Thursday 9th July it was exactly 140 years since the Methodist Minister, Rev Thomas Bowman Stephenson, opened the first Children's Home in Waterloo to help London's most vulnerable children.  George Oliver and Frederick James Hall were the first grateful inhabitants and since then the charity has supported and helped countless vulnerable children, young people and their families.

Since then, a lot has changed.  Instead of one children's home we now have 420 community-based projects across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland and help nearly 156,000 children and young people.

As a Church we raise money through various means.  Christmas Day collection, Gift vouchers to been given at Christmas, House to House collection, Store collections, Light of Life collecting boxes and donations.

From September 2009 to September 2010 (the Methodist year) we at Merrow have donated the magnificent sum of £2570 to AFC. We raised £680 for gift vouchers which was divided between the fostering and adoption projects in Fareham and Pastens at Oxted, a respite/care school for disabled children between the ages of 5 - 19 years. Also the communal Christmas card raised £180.
